At What Age Do Children Lose Their Teeth?

It’s not uncommon for a very young child to claim their tooth is loose. It’s exciting to lose teeth, especially with the promised tooth fairy rewards! But at what age is it common to start wiggling teeth out? When do you know there’s a problem?

When do children start losing their baby teeth?

Most children lose their front incisors from ages 6 to 7 years old, but it’s still considered normal if your child begins to have loose baby incisors from 4 to 8 years old. After the front incisors fall out, the lateral incisors are the next to go, followed by the premolars, canines, and second premolars. The window that most children lose all of their baby teeth is from ages 6 to 12.

How do teeth become loose?

In most cases, the adult tooth will push out the baby tooth. If the child’s mouth is crowded, sometimes teeth will appear behind the tooth. Usually the baby tooth will lose its root and the adult tooth will push itself into place. However, sometimes to speed the process or to fix other various issues in the mouth, the dentist will recommend removing the baby teeth to get the adult teeth into place as soon as possible.
