My Child's Braces, Wire, or Space Maintainer Just Broke. What Do I Do?
If your child’s braces, space maintainer, or other appliance suddenly broke, here’s a quick list on what to do. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call us!
Remove the Broken Appliance
If the broken appliance is easily removed, it’s best to take it out of your child’s mouth. Any protruding wires or pieces can be sharp and hurt your child.
If The Appliance Can’t Be Removed
If you can't take the appliance out, don't force it out. Cover the sharp or protruding portions with wax, gauze, or even chewing gum. Once your child is protected from the broken appliance, call us!
Broken Orthodontic Appliances
If it’s a broken orthodontic appliance, it’s not working as intended. Leaving orthodontic appliances out for long periods of time can delay treatment and even reverse progress. Call us or your orthodontist to repair the appliance and reinstall it so your treatment can continue on-track.
Loose/Broken Appliances That Don’t Hurt
Loose or broken appliances that don’t bother your child usually don't require emergency attention. It isn’t considered an emergency, so it’s okay to let your child’s mouth be for a few days until you can make an appointment. It doesn't take long to fix and reinstall most appliances, so we can fit you into our schedule.
What Breaks Dental Appliances?
